those cool lookin troop cars by walthers

Does anyone else have these? My brother is in the army and when ever he come over he runs the troop train. Does anyone eelse have or like these car?, I think they are pretty cool.

I’m happy with mine. I have six of the bunk cars, two kitchen cars, and couple of Pullmans for officer turf. It makes a nice train that is unique. I’ve got a set of FTs in the original D&RGW scheme to pull it.

It’s actually a bit early for my layout, which is set in the 50s-60s era. These are basically WWII only cars and were sold off to the railroads afterwards. That why you see so many in express and MoW service. Cheap war surplus.

Of course, in the different world on our layouts, these cars could have served in the Korean War and well into the 1950s. But I’ll bet there’s a lot of ex-GIs that are glad they didn’t, since Pullmans were pressed into service for all the troops when overnight troop trains were run in later years. I’m sure the enlisted got the low end stuff, but it would have been a step up from the troop cars.

There’s a good Wiki page on this, with several references to useful MR articles:

I missed out on the troop cars the first time around, however my Pullmans can create a troop train without too much difficulty.

Yes, I have the entire set, including the figures to go along with them if they are set up as a static display. I also have an old Model Power hospital car and several U.S. Army boxcars that were sold by Bev-Bel several years ago as custom decorated Athearns. I pull them with a set of Walthers Trainline GP9M locomotives decorated for U.S. Army.

Do anyone have a link to them? I’m going to run a troop train consisting of 10 14-section sleepers and one observation car(for the officers). But I would like to see these.

The kitchen car is Walthers # 932-4181

The sleeper is 932-4151.

There are a number of other stock numbers for undecorated cars, the conversions of these that Walthers is also doing, etc.

Thanks for the help. I appreciated it. They look very nice and perhaps I’ll get one or two. Especially the kitchen versions.

Thanks,

Magnus

Let’s see… there was a troop train video created in World War Two. Im going to have to search the forums because there is a site that hosts it. The forums did not have it but a simple search on Yahoo dug it back up:

The railroads were so pressed in service during WWII that many “freight only” locos were used to haul these troop cars. This included the H-8 2-6-6-6 on the C&O.

I’m sure that would raise an eyebrow or two by visitors…just like my Benedict Arnold pullman on my George Washington. [:D]

Walthers shows another run pending this july. One of the LHS in my area should have a few, will check next time I visit.
