Trains News Wire FLASH: Greenbrier designing new tank cars, retrofit kits

Good observation, Mr. Wright, of Trains being wrong again.

Guse,
Your post of Feb 6, 1721hrs…it’s rational, not inflammatory, apolitical, and hit the subject’s bull’s eye.
Hoping for more like it, Thank You.

Nowhere were the tank cars identified as “Greenbriar Built”. However, the Greenbriar fix can, I assume, be applied to All existing tank cars, even those built by Trinityrail.

Is there any good reason, other than slightly reduced capacity by volume, not to use recessed or flush mounted vents, valves, and hatches? If these components were flush mounted, there would be less chance of shear-off in a derailment. I have seen several different variations of highway tankers with flush or recessed mounted hardware for this reason.

That’s great that tank car manufacturer Greenbrier is developing a better tank car. Is it ironic that Trains.com used a photo of a string of Trinityrail-built tankcars? TILX reporting marks in the photo belong to Trinity,

Perhaps this would be a good opportunity to remove the bottom valve operating handles. Receivers could provide their own operating tools.

With a living room less than 2 car lengths from a BNSF mainline hauling crude, any improvement to car design to improve safety is very welcome. Way too much attention is paid to profits vs. safety for my comfort in the oil & gas business. Would BP still be in business if the Gulf Spill was in a LA parish?
