I just drove by the shops in Roseville, CA. and there must be fifty engins lined up in two rows.
Does anybody know what is up? I have driven by here every night for the past ten years and I have never see this much power in one place.

With the general economy down, less freight is being moved – demanding fewer engines. The other day I saw a local with 3 engines and 4 cars. Normally this train is 30 to 50 cars. Perhaps UP is getting caught up on inspections and maintenance – or they could be deadlining locomotives to postpone inspection work.

Lots of parked cars out on the sideings too
There are also line(s) of idled U.P. power at Proviso yard that can be seen from I294…perhaps Carl can provide some detail to that stored power.
The same can be said for Englewood Yard here in Houston. I-610 passes over the east end of the yard and there are a bunch of SD60’s, C40-8’s, SD40-2’s, and SD40 tunnel motors stored on a spur.
Come to think of it I passed Hinkle yard a week ago and it had two long lines of stored locos. Even took a grab shot.
And there are quite a few at Yermo too.
It’s a combination of a couple of things, first is the downturn in carloadings on UP, only 5% but still notable. Also with all the new ACe’s, GEVO’s and Gensets that are coming on line UP is bumping most of the older locomotives and the ones with mechanical problems from the roster and into the deadlines. Just give is about 30 years and we will be seeing the ACe’s and GEVO’s in the same place.
