I agree- I initially thought the whistle was very quiet. I also thought the space between the tender and loco could be improved, but I’m not sure of the prototype. Thanks MRR for a video review- it helps to see and hear how they work vs. reading about it.
Was this operated with a DCS controller?
should have put the microphone closer to the locomotive
Lokks amd sounds great but the only thing is it would have been nice if you dould have included track curve limitations and the sound looks like it might be a little weat but still an awasome model
To bad we could not hear it that good but it looks like a good train to have, wish I could afford one.
Very cool! This engine looks and sounds great. Someday I’d like to add a steam engine with sound & smoke to my “under construction” bedroom layout. But, I’ll need a loco that will work on 18" radius track.
I agree with Thomas, also from Washington, about the sound. My wife and I used to video weddings and soon discovered the microphone on the camera was inadequate to pick up sounds from a distance. We purchased a directional mike that attached to the top of the camera and a wireless lapel mike. Much better sound.
MY curiousity was piqued from watching the pleasant, perhaps too short video on the Dreyfuss Hudson: is it possible to make the smoke unit emit a sooty, off-white (gray mixed with charcoal) smoke from this otherwise fully functioning loco?
dident seem to be capable of a slow smooth start or slow speeds in general.Am i wrong?
Judging from the video, I was underwhelmed by the horn sound which sounded washed out and distant as well as the station start-up where the engine appeared to jump forward and leave at an unrealistic speed. My understanding of DCC is that it should be able to crawl very slowly. It does look nice however.
I hope there’s a way to turn up the volume. It seems like the real thing would be a lot louder if you were as close to it as the camera appears to be from the model.
It’s also too bad there isn’t an intermediate hole in the tender drawbar. If I remember correctly from the review, the close coupling will only work for 44" radius curves, while the coupling distance shown in the video works for 18" radius. Most modelers have 24" to 36" curves, but there are very few that have 44" or larger. An intermediate distance would make it look a lot better on medium radius curves.
Otherwise, the model looks good and sounds good.
I am thinking about purchasing one of these, but it seemed like there was a bit of a “jack-rabbit” start out of the station (illustrating the function 4 leave effect). Anyway, is this just the camera angle, the operator, or the actual model. I would think the CVs could be programmed for a smoother start. Any information would be appreciated.
With all due respect to MRR, this video really doesn’t do justice to the MTH Dreyfus Hudson Steam Loco. MTH’s video gives a much more accurate sound, & although the MTH website is a bit difficult to navigate (improvements are forthcoming), if you view their vid, you’ll both see, & hear what this loco is really capable of. Also, a must see, is their lovely brunette spokesperson…sigh - “Taylor!!!”
Hi Pete Charrette in Canada…long time since you were at South Broward High School, in Hollywood, Florida!
As this is a passenger locomotive, it would have been nice to see a higher speed pass-by…
MTH makes great locomotives. I saw the Empire State Hudson operating at a hobby shop.
This Hudson looks a lot different from the only one I have ever seen.
The Royal Hudson in Squamish,BC looks like a steam engine with a fancy paint job. This one looks like it wants to be a diesel stream-
liner and is engaged in a masquerade. Certainly the 4-6-4 layout is the same, but otherwise they don’t look like twin brothers.
The Hudson would be a great addition to anyone layout who is modeling this era. The smoke and sound are really cool and make this model come to life.
GREAT, BUT TO BAD ITS NOT A SANTAFE 4-8-4 OR 2-10-4. NO BIAS HERE. THANKS
Fantastic magazine, articles, abd photos etc., for the novice rail roader to the expert.
So, are we looking at what the standard is going to be in steam locos?? re sound , synchro’ chuff with the smoke in rhythm? Likely conversion kits out there now or soon… possibly only for brass, what do you think? MWM
