Walthers Coaling Tower Assembly Question

I am working on the Walthers Cornerstone Concrete Coaling Tower at present and am getting ready to fit subassemblies together. With respect to the tall rectangular cupola fitting into the roof of the round coal bunker how far into the square opening at the top of the round roof should that cupola go in- or conversely, what should be the dimension from the top of the roof opening arc where the cupola enters to the top edge of the cupola structure?

The instructions don’t seem to clearly state this. I have tried to “guestimate” from others’ published images, but can’t get a real good idea. Any advice on this? Thanks in advance for any assistance- as always!

Sounds like you are talking about the smaller of Cornerstone"s two concrete coaling towers. I’ve got the larger one (933-2903), and I can’t relate your question to it. Would you identify the kit number - and scale as well?

Good luck!

Coal Bunker

I am in the same place with the same coalbunker kit (933-3042).

I plan on asking on the various Pennsylvania R.R. websites to see if a blueprint is available.

It has been years since I saw the prototype, which was in the South Amboy, yard about 15 miles from my house in New Jersey. So I don’t know if it is still standing.

If everything else fails you can try to obtain a photo of the prototype and use known measurements such as a door to calculate the other dimensions. Let me know how you make out, I am not in a position right now to do a follow-up myself.

Sorry for the lack of info- the model I have is the HO smaller one # 933-3042 that I refer to in my original post.

Ron,

I will measure mine when I get home - The key is that the rails for the coal bucket lift need to go into the opening on the back of that small tower.

From one Minnesotan to another, thanks- I’ll watch for it later. I didn’t even think about the rails. I am doing the subassemblies of the concrete parts to paint, and the subs of the mechanical equipment to paint also, then using mid-speed super glue to place the mechanicals on the structure in their proper locations.

Push it all the way in. The round cylinder part should have a round cap on it.

It’s been gone for a few years now, along with the engine house and thaw shed.

By the way, Doc, what town are you in?

Sidetracking to another item with the coal tower: The track spacing on the box shows 3-5/8" from the center of the track in the shed to the center of the track under the tower with no dimension from the track under the tower to the outside track. I found that a 3-3/4" works better for the center of the track in the shed to the center of the track under the tower and 2-3/4" from the center of the track under the tower to the center of the outside track. Just a short memory recall moment with a quick check with the ruler on my track spacing.
