that same thing that gives all locomotives thier weatherd look… being out in the weather… rain and sun not to mention dirt and what ever else from passing trains getting blown onto them…

Some paints, some colors of paints, and sometimes just batches of the same paint, weather differently. Add in surface prep, frequency and type of washing (some of the cleaning agents are pretty strong) - assuming they wa***he locos at all, etc, etc, and you’ve got a pretty wide range of possibilities.
