[%-)]Now this is different[alien][wow]http://www.angelfire.com/mn2/Oubliette/Boxhill.html

…Yes, weird…

WTF?

Wanna see an even stanrger one??? http://Images.GreenFrogInternet.us/RRTrains/AlaskaRR/AntonAndersonMemorialTunnelInWhittierAK.jpg

If little Thomas is scared of the dark, can he tiptoe up those English stairs?

(Quoted from the above WEBpage) – Wiltshire Soup. Find one county with military bases in it. Stir in a ½lb of Rudloe bull manure. Put a sprinkling of UFO rumours in. Add 60 steam locomotives. Put in a dark tunnel for a few years. Bring it out into the daylight. Bring it to the boil and serve to gullible people up and down the country with a slice of conspiracy bread. Top with unsubstantiated rumours and tales. ENJOY.

Season to taste prior to serving.

ewooooooooooooooooooohewooooooooooh scary [alien][alien] definetley something going on there and that alaskan one…just plain weird and stupid…

Just stay between the yellow lines in Alaska and you’ll be fine…

Oh my goodness…[D)]

Sorry to disappoint the UFOlogists, but the first one’s pretty well documented. It was originally a stone quarry named Tunnel Quarry with its own branch line from the GWR main line, then was used during WW2 as a munitions depot, and an RAF control centre. Post war they were identified as a potential shelter in the event of nuclear war and outfitted for this - as far as I’m aware they’ve been unused since the '80s. I’ve seen a couple of photos showing the use as a munitions dump and control room, including a few modern-day ones showing old machinery left behind there.

Regarding the “strategic steam reserve” theory, this legend does have a basis in fact. Warsaw pact countries did maintain large numbers of steam locos for use in the event of nuclear war. There’s no concrete evidence of any sort of such a reserve in the UK though - one of the potential locations was recently thoroughly explored and only one small electric narrow gauge loco (used on the internal rail system) was found.

Sweden actually had a strategic reserve of steam locos across the country. They were kept in sealed barn type buildings and periodically checked over. When the cold war was deemed over, they were released from captivity.Don’t know the disposition of them, but a couple of them came over here for tourist lines, but I don’t remember which ones.

When they dug the moffet tunnel here in colorado usa ther dug a narrow side tunnel just wide enough for a mans shoulders then they dug latteral tunnels off that and started digging the big tunner from manns spots at the same time digging in both directions at once[8D]glennbob

P.S. I forgot to mention the narrow side tunnel did not go to waste it was bricked off from the latteral connections and is now a water main delivery tunnel to carry drinking water to denver colorado[B)][B)][B)][:I]>>>>glennbob

that was crazy and now my eyes r tired from reading…so there is no hideen tunnel??? yea i would just go up the stairs or jsut be on a train and i wouldnt worry about going to some secret military base

I’ve seen some weird ones too.

like wut?

There’s a tunnel there, but it’s nothing secret or sinister. It was originally an underground stone quarry (such things were fairly common in the area), then used as a munitions depot (given most of the munitions were coming in by rail, it made sense to retain the branch line into the old quarry). After the war it was converted for use as a shelter in the event of nuclear war - there are a few similar bunkers dotted around, some of which are now open to the public. I’m not aware of anything happening there at the moment though apart from occasional explorers.

Thats pretty cool actually. Gotta love a good story. How neat would it be to find a perfectly preserved steamer forgotten somewhere. The one that time forgot…
