Welcome Back to a New Forum?

Sure, Nick! On the old forum, I posted in this thread: Version 5 of The CB&Q in Wyoming - Model Railroader Magazine - Model Railroading, Model Trains, Reviews, Track Plans, and Forums
on 26 September 2023. There were 17 photos.

On the new forum, that same post (here) Version 5 of The CB&Q in Wyoming - #708 by Pruitt
has only three photos. Other long posts with many photos in the thread did the same thing (like the 10 September 2023 post for example).

Okay - received - I’ll check into this. I do know there were some limitations with the images being migrated from old forum to new forum so this may be the result of that.

All the old photos were linked to the site, as I’m sure you know. Kalmbach didn’t upload any photos.

Two questions -

  • Should I hold off on adding any new posts to that thread while you investigate, and
  • What is the image size limitation on this forum?

Happy to see the new forum up and running. I just went ahead and set up a new account as my old one was linked to an old email address that I couldn’t remember. I mostly lurk so I didn’t have a whole lot of history to lose. I’m just happy to see the progress as MR has been part of my life for 40 years and I’m looking forward to Firecrown’s resuscitation of these proud titles and associated online resources. Thank you everyone involved in getting the new forums up on their feet. I’m sure there’s alot more to do but progress is at hand.

Jeff

Yes, how many forum software changes have we been through now. I find myself back to my user ID from almost 10 years ago.

I’m glad the site got updated. It was very buggy for me before, but now I can use it more often!

WOW! The Forum is back! I’ve been lurking because I lost my access due to clearing the cache on my computer. There have been several times I wanted to post but couldn’t. It’s great to be back!

Yep, welcome back Rich!.

I just set up a new account, to change my forum name from doughless to DouglasHO to keep it consistent with other forums. Doughless died with Kalmbach.

Nick, there needs to be an option, as there was in the old Telligent/Verint Community software, to display ‘last post first’ by default in threads, particularly those that grow to multipage length. If that can’t be done, is there functionality as over at RyPN.org to display a button ‘go to first unread post’?

New forum looks nice. Long post such as Pruitt’s layout build just keep scrolling on the same page. There should be a way to jump directly to the new or unread posts.

Hi Nick! You folks getting the new forum up and running, plus making it easy to revive our previous memberships and keeping the unique-to-this-site wealth of decades of knowledge and wisdom intact does a lot to restore the faith of us who were about ready to give up on you. Thank you.

Your comment about seeing how old and active this community is, is spot on in terms of the value of keeping it and keeping it going. There are no doubt other interest areas with as long a record of community participation, but this one’s ours. For us there’s nothing else like it.

From my own experience as a longtime participant I can testify to how I’ve become cheerfully dependent on the wisdom and experience, as much as the wit, kindness and ingenuity of other members in keeping my interest and participation in the hobby productive and alive. Firecrown now owns a set of established resources, but that purchase could not include the guarantee it’d be accompanied by so many decades of loyal interaction MR and the old forums represent. So, you’re new to trains. We all were once. Welcome, if you haven’t already seen it at work, to the guarantee that all newbies are more than welcome, and that your presence will become valued as we continue to rely on each other as we move ahead.

The forums have always been about community. Welcome to ours, and thanks for your efforts to perpetuate it.

A button on the page that we could use to print out the whole thread of the topic would be useful, I think. I can’t be the only person who has printed a lot of these out for reference later at my workbench or layout. Using the ordinary print function offered on my laptop also prints out all the extraneous stuff alongside the thread. I’m only interested in the thread itself and I bet others would like that too.

Hi there - we have the ability to merge accounts in this new software - if you’d like to explore that option, message me directly so we can work through it.

Oh I love this idea - I’ll check into adding this functionality

Hi there. I agree with you. After some research, it seems this isn’t an out-of-the-box feature. However, I found that the system is designed to track your last read point and, when you return to a thread, it should take you directly to your unread messages. If I find a solution to this I will 100% implement it.

That’s exactly what it’s doing for me.

Nick, did you see the two questions I posted above? Might have gotten buried in later posts, so here they are again, regarding the truncated posts conversation:

  • Should I hold off on adding any new posts to that thread [the one I mentioned above] while you investigate, and
  • What is the image size limitation (for uploads) on this forum?

Copy - I think it will take some time to get used to but hopefully the ‘snap to unread’ will suffice.

And yes I did - taking some time to research it. I believe what we’re seeing is what we were able to migrate over but I’m reaching out to our Discourse experts. More to come

Interesting. I like the formatting preview you get instead of a preview post button.

A full width page is way better than the old half width table structure.
