Westbound stacks with helpers at Bennington Curve near Gallitzin

A heavy Westbound NS stacker rolls around Bennington Curve…site of the 1947 PRR Red Arrow wreck…on its final push to the summit tunnels at Gallitzin.

SD40E helpers shove on the rear of this train.

Dave, I do have memory of the news of the terrible Red Arrow wreck…I’m I thinking correctly, of a last coach decoupling from the train and running back down to Bennington Curve with much loss of life…Was it 80 some people…

The Red Arrow Wreck of 1947 involved an Eastbound steam powered passenger train which ran away cming down the grade from the Tunnels…The train came to Bennington Curve and instead of following the tracks around the curve, the train went straight, leaving the tracks and tumbling down the enbankment to the left side of the curve…The engines and several cars left the rails and ended up down the enbankment…there was loss of life as well as injuries.
