Western where is it 6/20/08

This one should be a little harder then yesterdays

Town with the concrete teepee motel, right?

Not that I recall.

If memory serves, doesn’t Helena, Montana, have a hillside outside of town with a white “H” on it, I think for the university? It would be in view of the Montana Rail Link tracks. Just a guess.

Yes, but this sure as heck isn’t Montana. This is clearly in a low-latitude desert. The scenery looks like I recall it around Holbrook, Arizona, but I can’t recall there being a hillside south of the main track.

RWM

No, it’s not Montana

Hint: This is a trackage rights train (or hauleage rights, I’m not sure)

Yep, that’s Hazen, NV and I’d speculate that’s the local (LC505J) that works out of Sparks, NV.

The BNSF Fernley Local, symboled LC505J, operates out of Sparks, NV to Fernley, NV 6 days a week, at times as far east as Hazen, Monday through Saturday, on Union Pacific’s Nevada Subdivision. The local is normally manned by 3 Union Pacific employees, an engineer, conductor and brakeman, although additional crew may work the train during student brakeman training.

Regular customers of this local include at Reno, BNSF Logistics and Reno Lumber. At Fernley the local regularly serves Paramont Petroleum, Qubecor, John Mansville and Trex.

Locomotives powering BNSF’s Fernley local are normally two EMD GPs, although in years past a single GE has been used on occasion. The power is generally rotated into Sparks from BNSF’s California operations about every 30 days. When not in use the Local’s power is parked adjacent to the “New” Sparks wye on East Glendale Street.

BNSF’s northern Nevada presence was an out-growth of the Union Pacific‘s merger with the Southern Pacific railroad during 1996. Operations of the local started as I remember it during 1997, maybe early 1998. During the early days of operation this local roamed the former SP route between Sparks, NV and Winnemucca.

Jimmy,

I live in Fallon and had no idea. Although I’v seen a BNSF train on occasion between Fernley and Sparks, I’v never seen one further east. Good info to have, thanks.

Mark

Mark,

There is a BNSF manifest train that runs Denver/Stockton or Stockon/Denver that is less than daily, about 10 to 12 times a week in addition to the local. It’s always a nice change from the yellow…

Reno, NV

Last month, I drove from Denver, CO to Texas. I pass the hill and I think it was going to Amarillo, TX on I-40 or 287… My guess!!

Right on the money !!! Good job. Sorry it took so long to get back, but I have been on the road.

Jim, Thanks for the aditional info, and it’s good to see you back in here again [;)]

I still pop in from time to time, but don’t post much, but when I saw your post I had to take a look. Opened it up and without looking at the other post just knew it was Hazen.

Take Care,

Jimmy B
