What did I see?

Saturday morning (I think) on NS Muncie branch slightly east of Lafayette, Ind., I saw 1 NS locomotive pulling what looked like a business car followed by something that looked like a cut down GP. It had no cab, and was lower in the middle than on the ends. Both it and the business car were nicely painted in what looked like the old NW passenger red. This was at about 5:30 AM, I wqas on my motorcycle going in the opposite direction (east) so could not get a good look. I know there are a lot of experts on this forum so - what was it? Where was it going? Where was it coming from?
Thanks,
Pat

…I’m in Muncie and didn’t see anything of it but will keep an eye out for it. Sounds like an inspection train of sort…but to have what sounds like a slug on the other end of the passenger car…Have no answers. Interesting. I did note the line was rather busy over this past weekend. Can hear the train horns from our home and seems there was rather busy periods.

Sounds like the AAR-110 gauge restraint test car. If so the the cut down GP was in reality a retrucked and cut down Southern Pacific SD45X (ex-9504?)…If that thing is on the loose, the NS Roadmaster/Track Supervisor is in for headaches in his less than perfect curves. The other car may very well be FRA T-6 (Geometry Car)…

MudChicken – Don’t you just love it when someone else gets hit with the hazardous bio-waste instead of you?

RKFarms,

I bet you seen these two cars:

…Great pictures…Now I really know what to be looking for…That “inspection car”…seems to be newly created or recently refurbished…and that Rockville stone arch bridge is really something…Where did they ever get all the stone and how was it transported to the site.

I live about a 10 minute drive from the Rockville Bridge, and it is defintely something to see. It’s cool because crossing the river on I-81 you can look out one window and see the Rockville Bridge and look out the other window and see the Enola Yard. I’ve never researched the bridge, but I imagine the stone is all local. Lots of quarries in this area, and lots of rock would have been excavated when laying track around the area. I’m sure you could find lots of info with a Google search.

…It is an interesting spot…I have had the opportunity to see it several times in the past. And I’m sure Google has a bunch of stats on it…

I saw it in Flostoria,OH looked like a slug to me and the number was 34 it was very interesting to see.

spbed-Mirage?! what are you thinking I guess you never seen one of those

PS yes I know Flostoria is misspelled

Great pictures-this is what I saw, but at 5 AM it was not lit very well and I had to watch traffic.
