What Locomotives are on your Fantasy Railroad?

Afternoon!

I’m curious if anyone here has a fantasy railroad with an interesting roster!! For mine, it’s the Iowa Central Railroad and MidTrans, for the IACR, the roster mainly consists of GE locomotives like the GE ES44ACMH and GE AC44CWMH

I have two with multiple engines:
Forest Railway (my avatar is the logo) has nine GP20s (in four different schemes), an F7A and an SW1000.
Montana Ponderosa has an RS-1, an F7B (Snow plow power) and 2 S4s.

For me it if I did a freelance railroad would be run by ex Santa Fe guys that would love to get their hands on rebuild power from the Santa Fe. So starting out a mixture of SD26 and GP30s on the mainlines and then CF7 and GP7s and 9s on branches with SB1200s in the yard.

Well…
My freelanced L&M Railroad is something of a caricature of a real railroad, so it has a most unusual roster. In other words, steam power runs alongside modern diesels (and vintage diesels) due to a bureaucratic oversight. Furthermore, the part that I model is the Lignite Subdivision, so all the really old junk gets dumped there. My roster of locomotives that I actually own?

  1. Ex-NYC 591, an old 4-4-2 that has seen a long life but still runs–if you push-start it!
  2. L&M 1110, an old 2-4-2 that once had a wreck that caused the collapse of the Carbon Coal Co.'s Shaft B, demolished the old coaling trestle, and took days to clean up. A bit of repair (in other words, a rebuilt boiler) and it was up and running again!
  3. L&M 3945, an EMD FP7 that was purchased dirt-cheap after EMD built it instead of an F7 for the Santa Fe!
  4. UP 9449, a GE C41-8W that was leased from the Union Pacific. It has earned the name ‘Rent-A-Wreck’ for its tendency to break down with a business train, block spurs, and run off with oil trains. It also arrived with a broken pilot…
  5. Ex-Wabash 8604, the Subdivision’s biggest assigned steamer at the moment. It’s known for producing great volumes of smoke.
  6. Ex-PRR 249, a small locomotive that was a gift (as in, take this thing, we don’t want it anymore!) from the Pennsy. When the L&M got it, the wheels were unable to rotate.
  7. Ex-DMIR 8813, an EMD/DMIR SD-M that was purchased from a grain company in Parshall for $5.

Each of these is directly based either on its model counterpart (for example, my model 9449 really did have a broken pilot and my 8604 is the only loco I’ve got with smoke) or on the real one (the Lake Superior Railroad Musueum traded a DMIR SD-M to a real grain company in Parshall, to my knowledge it’s still there!).

You sure have a lot of GEs!

No Kidding!

I have another fantasy railroad that’s made up of pure Cowl Units and Draper Tapers

I do have to mention that the $5 doesn’t account for the cost of beer involved!

Doesn’t sound too far removed from the DMV&W, actually!

To be honest though…

All the locomotives on the Southern Heartland Railway are Cowls/Draper Tapers…

Even the Shop Switchers…

Like the EMD GP15ACF :expressionless:

No basis in a real railroad whatsoever, right?

My freelance was a mix of SW1500s and SD40-2 units. Then again, somehow a BL32 ended up on the roster

I forgot to mention, on the Southern Heartland Railway, there is a batch of MP36PH-3Cs on the roster…

@Jimmy_Braum, what’s a BL32? Is that an actual unit or a fantasy unit I’m curious lol

Nice, Bachmann is good for HO, but I prefer Athearn more though for N, or HO
