went on ebay today there was a item on there i wanted came down to the last couple seconds got into a biding war and went to out bid and they asked me to sighn in agin needless to say i lost not happy not happy at all[V][V][V]
Thats called "time-out "…not very nice !
Why don’t you just proxy bid what you are willing to give and leave it at that? Saves overbidding in the excitement or loosing it on a timeout/refresh glich. Fred
Be carefull with Ebay. People have been getting hit with fake emails that look like they come from Ebay. Even have the correct return email. I got several so far. The last one said. “I paid for your item weeks ago. I haven’t received it yet. If you don’t respond ASAP I will report you to Ebay and also call the police. You must think I am pretty dumb.” If you click on the respond button it will tell you that your account have been closed. I was on to it right away. I have NEVER sold anything on Ebay, just bought stuff. People will try to scam you, if you are not allert, they can get ya. I sent the email to Ebay. After they investigated it it turned out to be a scam.

when you sign on to ebay be sure to put the check mark in the little box under your password to keep you signed in unless you sign out. i lost out on a bid last night when they had the incorrect time left on the item i wanted to bid on.
Ive actually had great luck with ebay… great way to find things that you cant at the big dealers. I dont mind buying a locomotive that was ran a few times or just test ran… they break it in for ya. But i do make sure there can be a return if needed
Absolutely, put your bid in early for the max you will go. Do not snipe. The SELLERS will elect you to the eBay Hall of Fame. Of course you will never get a bargain and will likely never win anything unless you go for more than it is worth. Oh I forgot, it is easy too.
Make sure you’re aware of number of seller’s transactions and his satisfaction percentage. Some sellers just getting rid of junk, others take great pride in satisfying their buyers and often have more integrity than some retailers. I’ve always been impressed with sellers who opt to have all their transactions listed so you can click on them and see what was auctioned. A seller with a high satisfaction percentage on high end items(locos, DCC units, etc.) gets weighted higher(on my personal scale)as opposed to a seller with high satisfaction percentage on low end items.(cars, structures, etc.) The aforementioned applies to non-brass items. I assume if you’re into brass you know what you’re bidding on because it ain’t cheap no matter where you get it.
The axiom that "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t " is a caution worth remembering.
flee307’s advice about excitement and overbidding is well worth heeding. I’m always amazed to see winning bids that are more than what you can get the item via mail order or LHS.

Ebay is more a game than a place to buy stuff, if you don’t want to play, you will be frustrated to death. Be sure to watch prices. I love to see people paying 2 - 3 times what they could buy it for at the local hobby shop.
Four or five days ago I got a notice from ebay that the item I had listed for sale for $5900 had been posted. SAY WHAT? I didn’t post anything for sale for about three months and certainly not at that price. Before I could reply I got an email to the effect that an unauthorized party had listed using my name and password and that I should change my password on all email accounts. Instead I transferred everything in my PayPal to my checking account.
Ebay NEVER sends emails about your account. If they want to talk to you, they will put a message in “YOUR EBAY” on their website. Any email you receive purporting to be from ebay, except notifications that you have won or lost a bid, are SCAMS and should be forwarded to Spoof@ebay. com. No, I don’t work for Ebay, but I have bought and sold lots of Model RR stuff on it, and have never had any problems.
If you really are serious about keeping your LHS open, then give “them” your support and stop playing idiot games on EBAY.
I use e-bay for locomotives and stuff that is sold out. I found a nice SD40-2 CNW new body style for a good price. It is sold out, so to me some stuff is worth getting on e-bay.
now they just suspended me i dont know whats going on?
Here we go again!
Sorry not everyone is up to your higher level of consciousness. I looked over the rules for this forum, and I didn’t notice where anyone needed to run their purchasing decisions by you for approval.
I never really gotten took or lost an item when I bid on ebay for trains. 2 weeks ago I got into a slight bidding war over a Norscot bulldozer. Fortunately I won it because at the time Walthers didnt have any in… I always make sure I have the leave me signed in box and only have ebays site refresh me or is it return to item. Anyhow thats for that. But I did get took on a computer I item I wanted I actually got refunded after I fought with the seller through paypal and left negative feedback.
Mark, it sounds like your testosteron level is way to high…cool it young man, what I was trying to get across if you took the time to read into what I was saying, was that over the past several years there has been many , many threads on this forum regarding closures of LHS, and how far people had to travel now to the next nearest LHS. Also, most of these people did buy some items on the internet, and some on EBAY as well, and that is their right certainly. I am NOT trying to tell people what to do, only trying to point out that you can’t have it both ways. If we don’t support the LHS’s, they will one by one disappear, never to return. And as we move towards fewer and fewer stores, we also move closer and closer to a Monopoly, and we all know what that means for prices don’t we !!! Ask yourself this question, would you rather to go to a LHS that has a nice stock of everything, where you can touch, handle, even run some of the locos if you wish, have knowledgable people to talk with, and give you the “time of day”, or, depend on the internet for everything that you need and hope that what you buy is really what you want? There is a place for BOTH, and a TIME for BOTH, but we must not let the LHS go under, that inded would be a trajedy.
Mark, have a great day, and control the power.
Stifle overbidding and excitement.

***,
My testosterone level is perfectly fine, but thanks for the concern. Every time somebody mentions ebay or buying online, we get folks crawling out of the wood work telling them if they don’t buy from the LHS, they are going to destroy the hobby, which will destroy the economy which will lead to the fall of the free world.
If you read your own post, you referred to buying from ebay as an “idiotic” game. To the poor guy who posted the original question, that’s a bit of a slap in the face. As a result, you got my reply. Neither of us knows his circumstances, location, the quality or location of his closest LHS, its business practices, etc. And as we seem to agree, it is not either of our concern where he chooses to spend his MRR dollars.
As for the discussion of the LHS, they will either make it or not based on their own merits. That is a value judgement that each of us makes on his own.
Have a good one, ***. And let’s try to relax the adjectives.
And thats Ebay’s fault? LOL, everybody always blames Ebay and Paypal for their own mistakes, lol. [:0]
