Here is a picture over the wye (red lines) at Salt Lake City that was used to turn the Rio Grande Zephyr 5771 before the journey back to Denver. Where is Grant Tower located in the picture?
I also wonder where Union Pacific depot and Rio Grande Depot is located in this map (link below)?
I don’t think so. I believe the wye from those days was more like this:
The Rio Grande station is the building with the bright red roof, two blocks straight off of the interstate that is coming in from the West. There are no railroad tracks around it on the Google map today. Or you can just follow my yellow line straight south to the building with the bright red roof. The Union Pacific Station isn’t in the linked map at all. It is one block further east of the map posted map. To find it, just have google find “Virgin Megastore” on the map. It has a grey roof.
Thanks for correcting me, you are absolutely right. I just forgot that there are no track there anymore, that’s the reason I could not find it. Here is a updated picture with Rio Grande Depot and Union Station Depot.
After looking carefully at the various links, and at the available satellite photos, I believe that Grant Tower is located very close to the right edge of the photo you posted. From the upper right switch of the wye you red-marked, proceed straight right to the brown-roofed oval building in the middle of what looks like a wide boulevard. The small tan-roofed building at the 10:30 (clock orientation) position from the center of the oval building, just across the street, appears to be in the right location for Grant Tower when compared to the 1969 satellite view. In larger magnification, what appears to be a road parallel to the street, running from the curved railroad track to the back of the building I identified as Grant Tower, looks like a covered cable trench.
The space now occupied by that boulevard-looking arrangement (transportation center?) was once occupied by railroad tracks. Residual traces of the original wye can be seen in the 6:00-8:30 arc from the tower.
I may be completely wrong, since I have not investigated on the ground. Hopefully, someone from Salt Lake City will let us all know if I should accept congratulations or a faceful of egg.
It’s readily apparent (to me, at least) that the reason you cannot find Grant Tower, is that you’re looking in the wrong section of the country.
It’s near the northern tip of Manhattan in New York City, where it sits above a monument. It’s used to improve the television reception in Grant’s Tomb!!!
I think you are right guys. Texas Zephyrs yellow line is right where it should be, that’s the old wye where they turned the Rio Grande Zephyr for the journey back to Denver. The house with the rounded wall, is it possible to find some pictures on the net of it? Thanks to all for your great help.
