The other day while in Chicago Union Station, I noticed a white sign with black letters- the standard DTC-type sign- reading “BEGIN RENO BLOCK”. I’m assuming this is (or was) in (or around) Reno, Nevada on the Union Pacific.
If so, it was way out of position in Chicago!!

Just where was this sign located?
Has nothing to do with Reno,Nv. It’s just the name of the DTC block. DTC, Direct traffic controll will have blocks with different names. These blocks are typicaly between sideings. To enter that section of track the train has to have authority to move into that block. When the train has cleared the block the conductor will release that block back to the dispacher. If it’s dark territory trains can only share a block at restricted speed. If there is an ABS signal system overlay then following movements can be granted blocks also granted to a train ahead.
I just wondered where the Reno Block was, if anyone knew, realizing it probably didn’t have anything to do with the city of the same name (I’m GCOR qualified).
It was in Union Station…on the platform.
Could it have been a block of passenger cars being dropped off at Reno?
