This website doesn’t allow any others than members to use it’s email option! Therefore, it will not add to your spamming burden. You have the option of allowing direct email correspondence with other members of this site. However, many of you choose not to allow this option. Why not? Most of us consider each other friends here and direct communication adds to our enjoyment of this hobby.
I guess if you were a famous celebrity, this would be nice for you! That must be it!! Those whom do not allow direct emailing are celebrities! There are other reasons, which just can’t be right; paranoia, over estimation of self worth, the ability to act like a jerk and not be called to task for it. Those options can’t be the reason! So, you must all be Celebrities!
There is so much junk e-mail out there that I think there is an unwillingness to put yourself out there more than neccessary. I have allowed the e-mail option from the start and never had a problem from this forum at all. However, I do use my MSN account which is the one I use for any web site sign up. I have so far managed to keep my business e-mail relatively free of junk this way.
When I was a kid growing up, I had a paper route. I would go to collect from all my customers. I would go up to all the doors and there would be Welcome mats. Except one. It said “Go Away.” I hated collecting from that guy, even though he was nice enough and tipped when I collected. It might have been that he worked nights.
Bob Boudreau, You are a real celebrity, so you are excused! If you ever need to talk to me, feel free to use my email tab and send autograph! Now, where were the bozo’s demonstrating?
I’m a member of various forums (web design, snake breeding, etc) and make a practice of not allowing email from any of them. It isn’t because I don’t want contact with people (which is ridiculous considering I’m a member of the forum) but rather because, for unscrupulous people, it’s very easy to sign up for a free account, and then go through the member list and harvest those email addresses for the purpose of selling them to spammers. I’ve had several previous email addresses rendered pretty much useless due almost to this fact alone. That member may not contribute a single post to the community and still, just by signing up for the account, they’ll have access to those addresses.
I don’t consider myself paranoid, I just don’t have time to go through hundreds of emails a day trying to sort them out. Most forums have a good PM system anyway (not sure if we do here or not).
So for those of us who don’t allow, it’s not necessarily that we’re unfriendly…for me it’s just become habit.
Many people are quite content to use this forum to carry on a conversation about a topic we all have in common and feel no need to carry it elsewhere for a one-on-one private chat.
I belong to many different forums on different topics and do not choose to make my email address known on all of them. Mine is public here and I do welcome private messages, but if it became a problem as it has been on occasion elsewhere I would remove it in a heartbeat.
I have lots of friends in other settings but I don’t feel the need to invite everyone of them to call me at home. It has nothing to do with being a celebrity or being paranoid. Frankly , the last person I’d want to talk to is one who questions my motives and calls me names for not giving them my private contact info.
And you’re wrong about one thing, not everyone in this group or any other needs to be considered a “friend” though I’ve become friends with a number of modelers that I’ve come to know through the forums. There is a difference between being friendly and being a friend.
My only e-mail address is my professional one. I’ve tried several of the free e-mail services for personal e-mail and have found them to be worthless. (Just my own viewpoint). My company doesn’t mind my receiving personal e-mails but has a rule against providing e-mail address to public forums and the like.
There’s a forum that I belong to that discusses pinewood derby cars. Instead of allowing emails to be sent they have a message box for each member. If I want to contact someone directly I can put a message in his/her box. This works out really well. On the other hand, with the number of members here, such a system could prove problematic and require too much memory storage to make it work.
Muddycreek, I said “Most of us consider each other friends”, I did not say “We’re all friends”! If your going to quote me, don’t make up WHAT I SAY, as YOU go along!
O.K., so here’s a reality check for you; Since I have been a member on this forum which is since the end of 2002, I have had my email available on my posts. I have emailed 4-6 times and talked to only a few folks here. Only a couple of emails have originated from this forum for me. So, if you allow emails from this forum, you are not going to get 100s of emails a day from it! Trust me, none of you guys/gals are that popular! Also, since most of you use “handles”, none of us can decifer whom the celebrities are so, why the secrecy?
I asked why you don’t want to be emailed, and those of you whom do not want to be emailed have explained. The celebrity, paranoia, over estimation of self worth were jabs at you with an attempt at humor. I appologize, if you didn’t get it.!
I’m not so sure it’s a problem, TrainBoard has a similar ‘private message’ function. Since it only gets used for messages between members, it’s not overloaded like a regular email system.
I suspect it’s just that it’s an option that wasn’t offered in the software package that MR used to set up their forums. They have the emailing through the forum option.
I’m hurt, Mark. And all this time I thought my not receiving emails was because my server had problems, now I find out that it’s because I’m not popular!! [:D] I’ll have to go and run some trains to drown my sorrows.
Several times a year I recieve a email related to a thread or two on these forums. The low level of activity is just fine with me. I prefer the forums where everyone may read the posts.
I have been buried by spam in the past. I dont have that problem now. But… if it becomes a problem then I will pitch the email completly from the internet. My ISP does a very good job stopping the spam.
Mine is on here. I have e-mailed and received e-mail through this site and found it very refreshing not to have to worry about who or what it is I am receiving. Anyone can e-mail me through this site and I will answer. Even the grump bears, like me. Ain’t it great!!
Archie
One person’s secrecy is another’s privacy. It is also called being selective. Also called being cautious. Whatever the reason, the decision is one I respect.
Sorry, I see enough name calling here and elsewhere to assume what is written is what is meant.
If you click the email icon at the bottom of someone’s post, it does NOT give you their email address.
So the idea that someone could create an account and sell email address’ to spammers does not hold water. The only way for them to get YOUR email address is for YOU to email them. Go ahead, try to get my email address. Dave
