Tomorrow is my last day as a law clerk for the Indiana Court of Appeals, and I will be starting a job at a downtown Indy law firm on Monday (it would have been nice to have a few days off in between).
The sad reality of working for the government is, my current job was ridiculously easy, and I needed the forum just to relieve me from boredom when I would get my projects done early (aren’t you all glad you pay taxes—for what it is worth, I worked as hard as the work would possibly allow me).
Anyway, now that I am going in the private sector, I imagine that I will hardly have any free time for niceties like eating, sleeping, and spending time with my wife (we are expecting our first child by the way)—much less regular forum chats. So, come Monday, it is unlikely that you will see too much of me on here.
I might be able to get a tidbit here and there, so I hope good topics continue to flow for the few times I am able to participate.
I consider many of you friends, and I hope you keep in touch via e-mail should an interesting topic that you know to be of my liking appear on the forum or if you happen to be visiting Indy. I would mention you all by name, but you know who you are and I wouldn’t want to run the risk of offending anyone by accidentally forgetting a name.
I hope you guys (and girls) will remember me and recognize me in what I imagine will be rare visits to the forum.
Gabe
P.S. It would be really big of me not to take a parting shot at anyone upon leaving, but I am a heartless lawyer without a conscious:
Open access is simply a ploy by the power industry—that is more guilty of monopolistic practices and price fixing than any railroad—to risk the entire transportation industry and other customers served by rail so they can make 7% more profit in the next ten years—roughly the amount of time it would take for the government to have to bail out the industry—and middle management do
Godspeed to you Gabe in the new profession, and with the new family member. Stop in when you get a chance. I always enjoy hearing your opinion on matters, especially those where your profession can add much to the topic.
Well congrats on the new job, I hope you like it. And congrats on the addition to the family. Too bad you will not have time to do the forum. I for one enjoy your contributions and will miss you being here with us. I do hope you will find the time to drop in once in a while. Good luck Gabe.[8D]
Good luck in the new job Gabe. Enjoyed your to the point comments. Hope that you do have time to visit us in the future. Good luck with your new family. From experience children and grand children are great. I have 2 children and 7 grandchildren and only wish I could spend more time with them. Soon I will have more time to devote to the forums andgrand children as I will officially retire at the end of March.
Oh Gabe - My only free lawyer ever and now no more! Maybe Judge Gabe…?
Congrats on new job and coming addition! And as soon as you are settled in and really comfortable, you will miss us and find a few minutes to sneak on here!
I would imagine that what you send and receive on the 'Net will be watched more closely, now that you’re at a private firm. My sister is an administrative type at a law firm and all of her emails include the “standard disclaimer.”
The best of luck to you. Don’t be a stranger (sometimes we need those “legal” opinions around here!)
Hey! Me too and all of the above. Just remember to keep the billing hours under 24 a day and give us an alert when you get that high profile case so we can add the Indy paper to our favorites list.
All the best,
Jay
P.S. Does being called a scoundrel grounds for a libel suit? If so, send me the new firm’s rates.[:-,][:-,]
ditto ditto ditto – I’ve always found your thoughts well worth reading, and valued your opinions! Congratulations and all that, and visit now and then!

I remember another midwesterner who completed law clerking and went into private practice for a while. He even did a little work for the railroads. May you do as well as he did – his name was Abe Lincoln!
Thanks everyone for the kind wishes. Yes, I will miss you all and the forum a great deal and visit whenever I can. Perhaps I can set aside an hour every Sunday or something like that.
Gabe
P.S. Jay, as far as the scoundrel comment goes, I don’t think I have seen a more deserving pro bono project in my life.
Good luck Gabe and I have found your insight and posts to be very informative. You have a very talented method of putting across ideas and arguments. I think you should do well in the legal field.
