That is awesome!
YOWSA!!!
Man that thing can move what the top spped of those things
Very, Very cool. Thanks for the link. Now if they’d just pull a Big Boy outta mothballs…
IIRC, Challengers, while not exactly “pokey” aren’t actually all that fast - top speed is about 70mph. Articulateds weren’t known for high speeds but rather power - in fact, one thing that made the Challenger so notable was that it ran quite fast for an articulated.
If you want fast, you need to find a loco with tall drivers. The Hiawatha 4-4-2’s were quite fast, many 4-6-2 Pacifics were quite quick, etc. Speed versus power depends in large part on diameter of the drivers.
Don’t have to be just a steam lover to appreciate that! Nice stuff.
Very nice.
It looks like a professional railfan video. But I’m sure you wouldn’t copy a commercial product and post it as that would be robbing the owners of potential revenue and BREAKING COPYRIGHT LAW. cough
(Oh I better put on my flame suit for being retentive by doing the right thing…) [:D]
Richard,
That is just WAY TOO COOL!!! [tup][tup] I’m bookmarking that one for sure!!
Muchos gracios!!! [^]
Tom

thanks for taking the time to post

Very nice! Makes you really appreiciate the power of steamers.
I saw 3985 in Ogden this past year, and it’s absolutely amazing in person. For anyone who hasn’t stood next to one of these machines, it’s an experience. Even non railfans would appreciate the sheer size and visual power these locomotives have, even when they are sitting still.
Hopefully UP keeps the excursion program up!
Jeff
I never claimed that I was the one who made the video. I was just sharing the this one that someone else put up for sharing on youtube. They put up the link for everone to see. Me make money or claim it was mine, Na, never, not me, I wouldn’t do that. I just thought you guys would like to see it.

That…was…AWESOME!!!
I think thats the best video steam I have seen so far
I like the fact it’s someone in the right spot at the right time
thanks again
sounds like a thousand horses running
Oh Man! (Wiping the slober off his chin) That is beautiful!!! That baby is really challengering the rails. Great shots of the valve gear!
Way Cool!
Gotta loveit!
Incidentally, really fast steam requires well-balanced drivers, not necessarily tall ones. N&W routinely ran J’s at 90mph, and once pushed one to 110+, on drivers only 2" taller than those under a Challenger.
Great HO railroad, nice, realastic scenary, great sound…makes me want to do portions of my rr over.
