Today I’m inspecting two new acquisitions. Two commemorative proofs. An 1854-S Double Eagle and a 1933 Saint-Gaudens $20 Gold Double Eagle. As far as it is known not a single example of an 1854-S Douple Eagle was saved. Out of 141,468 coins struck not a single one was saved. Only one original proof coin is known to have been struck.
On the 1933 $20 Double Eagle, they have been the stuff of legend. They were made legally but were illegal to own as soon as they were made. It shouldn’t exist but it does. Nearly half a million were struck in 1933 despite FDR’s recall of all gold coins. They never circulated and remained in storage until they were ordered destroyed in 1937. A few were pocketed by mint employees but the theft wasn’t noticed until 1944. Nine coins were recovered but one escaped. What happened to it afterward is for you history buffs to track down. Wikipedia has quite a bit of information about it.
IIABSDISEI with temps in the 90s. Yesterday was a monumental day. I closed out my dad’s account. Kind of appropriate timing so close to the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”. Looking forward to the race tomorrow although not looking forward to the heat. Could be an endurance race for the fans and drivers alike. We are in the shade for most of the day so it will not be as bad as for those bleaching in the sun. Work has been extremely busy and even Friday was much more productive than it should have been when I close the month. I did go on my daily walk at lunch, but when I came home, I crashed big time. All I did was sleep and I have done little today as well. Too hot to do anything outside. The dog seems to appreciate the back porch A/C, and it appears to be working ok. Going to Mass in a bit to pray for a safe race. Not too optimistic about any of my favorites winning, but this could be a different type of race. Would be hilarious if the two Loti were the only ones running at the end, but I think they will be black flagged early for going too slow.
I got my CTT today. I have not read it all, but I will do so in the next few days. Have not ran trains in so long. Will have to do that as well sometime. I will have to get more involved here again. Just cannot find the time or the energy. Not sure why. I guess we all go thru lulls in activity.
I have rambled on enough. If either Sarah’s or AJ’s team wins tomorrow, look for a couple of red shirted fans jumping up and down in Grandstand A. The key numbers are 14 ,39, 41 and 67. TBIL and I can drive tonight, but we will be circling 16th and Georgetown all night long. I hope everyone has a good day.
Hot here. 92 so far. Finished the front yard work - moving soil, etc. The old tree ring has a lot of the tree roots (big) and a “bowl” from the first stump grinder work. Originally we used the old ring for a flower bed but after years it got so weed choked and the drought finished off the plants. Will have to get the stump grining/tree trimming guy out after the graduation party next weekend. Moved 4 large decorative stones from the old beds that were isolated in the yard after we removed the beds. Was able to drag and pry them into a poistion as part of the remaining tree ring. Worked the stones into the decorative landscape brick wall/ring. Worked from 8 until 2:30 with a short break at 11 for breakfast. Tired but gald it is done.
Watching the NASCAR Nationwide race. NASCAR and Indy tomorrow.
**KEV…**a Kia gets scraped, scratched, dented, and bashed too. I detest driviing a vehicle that looks like it went through the wars, especially when someone else’s carelessness caused it…and then they skip. When I hit 100K miles and/or 6 years on a vehicle, I like it to look and run close to what it was when it was new (or new to me). I drive them longer than most, 10-12 years, before moving on to the next one. My Dad instilled in me these things…by putting me at a young age in charge of doing all of the washing, inside/outside cleaning, and waxing. His attitude? “Dog vomits in the car and slobbers all over the windows? No problem…Jack, go clean it up like it didn’t happen.”
Jack
I am with you Jack.
I can’t stand to be seen in a wreck on wheels. I have kept the Dakota in what I think is nice shape considering I use it as a truck, a lot. Hauls the cargo as needed.
I am at a crossroad with her now. She is starting to get the one problem you can’t ever win from. RUST. I have told myself I will just let it rust and keep driving it but I find myself looking at the new Chevys a lot.
Jack I look at my 2003 Chevy silverado it has 170,000 miles on it. has a few dings ( I was second owner) has small rust hole in rear bumper ( they were know for that from what I hear) I need to detail interior, wash and wax it but i have no plans of getting rid of it as here I would be shooting myself in the foot. as it is I pay like $200 a year for tags and taxes on it. If i would get a new vehicle that would go way up. I’m happy with what I have.
Its a full size 6 passenger truck. has the half doors for the rear as I call them but theres plenty of room back there. 6’4" bed.
small V-8 I think its the 307 its something like 4.7 litter I think. maybe 5.2 I don’t remember with the litter numbers give me the old 307, 283, 327 ect
Has enough power and get up and go for me. @ wheel drive ( don’t need 4 x 4 down here or at least I don’t. )
Not much going on here.
Went back to ER spent about 4 hrs there today was given different meds for my tenderness on my back. told to take it easy for the rest of the weekend so was given a excuse from work.
Well need to get a few things going talk to you all later
Aloha. [ip]. Great day. Middle boy graduated from high school. As many of you know, there were times I thought he wouldn’t make it. I am … relieved. [Y] Setting up the trains to run for his graduation party tomorrow. Here’s all three kids together (a rare sight these days) .
We had a busy Saturday yesterday. The baseball team had a game in the morning; the kids played okay but could have stayed more focused during the game. I finished transplanting some shrubs and planting new bushes in the yard. At night, we had a neighborhood cookout which was very fun. We should have a very relaxing Sunday today. It is sunny and warm outside and we will attend Sunday school and church in a couple hours. I believe I will have a nap afterwards and then do some reading. I’m hoping my digital version of the latest CTT is ready for download today or tomorrow.
Jack – Good on you for initiating that event. I’m glad your hope in people has been restored. I believe most people care but we only here about the negative events.
It was an interesting day filled with lots of paperwork and getting new equipment stuffed into our office plus getting some more stuff done at the church…!http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_phew.gif....then off to the cafe to rest one’s beleagured bones then off to get some more groceries to cover for tomorrow’s operating session and BBQ…
I started my sick leave this weekend because, well, it is radiation/chemo next week…and I need time to get some things done before I am too ill or some such…!http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_scared.gif...but I am still going to get some photos done next week of some of the layout…
Hey has anyone tried to get ahold of marty at MA&PA Juntion lately I think about a week ago or so I was on his site but can’t get it tonight all I get is internet explorer can not display web page then the diagnose the problem button. ( tried both computers )
RT - he wasn’t at York. I heard he was going to close up shop, but you said he just opened a new store? I’m scratching my head man, dunno.
Had some issues this morning - guess too much rich food the past 2 days. Worked on the basement this afternoon until dinner time. My son helped me hold up long pieces of drywall to “wall in” along the sides of the dropdowns for the ventilation and support beams at the bottom of the stairs. 16 ft on one side, then the other side is broken up into a box about 4 by 6, which is all done and ready for the drop ceiling after I mud and tape it. We still need to do about a 4 foot wide by 20 inch section right at the bottom of the stairs with an angled part, then clean up the edges and do a few other little chores.
Feet hurt from being on the ladder so long - blah.
It’s 70 now, a mixture of weather today, Sun, clouds, showers, the works.Heat stayed south of us but is suppose to move in overnight. CTT arrived today, I gave it a run through, looks like a good one. RT there is a thread about Marty on OGR, seems like nobody has heard from him recently. Doug congrats to your son I hope he does well in college. Banilla is waiting for the thingy crew…S.J.
Time for me to call it a night. My niece had a pool party today to celebrate her birthday. Lots of swimming, sodas, beer, grilling and barbeque. The grilling and barbeque got my attention. I ate my fill and brought more home. See y’all tomorrow.
It’s a Cadillac crossover. First generation 2007 SRX with the third row seating, AWD 6-speed, 4.6L Northstar V8, rear A/C, NAV, DVD/theater pkg. with surround sound, XM satellite radio, heated leather seating, On-Star, drivers’ pkg., separate center row HVAC controls It was a lease turn in with 27K miles on it, 45% off the original list just two+ years old when I found it. The depreciation for the first owners of these cars was so bad I couldn’t pass it up.
Top speed 144, quick to 60 for a 4,400 pound vehicle (about 6.6 seconds). Towing pkg (4,250 lbs), backup sensors (with warning lights and warning bells to supplement), voice actuated controls, more gadgets than the space shuttle. Oh yeah…the UltraView sunroof (with express sunshade) is the largest sunroof ever put in a passenger vehicle, opens over the center row passengers as well. Even the center row seats are adjustable.
The second generation SRX (2010-2012) has neither the interior space nor layout configuration for us to get our dog crates in the rear and still have room for 5 passengers. Much slower than mine too [swg] even with the 2012’s upgraded engine (V6).
Pam and I could not be happier with it, fantastic road trip vehicle, and fun to drive.
I was reading about Marty OGR. He was in the hospital, but I didn’t see any updates since.
Blownout,
[angel]
Got the marker lights working, fresh grease, and a fresh battery in the PS1 Turbine. [tup] I really don’t think it has seen more than a very brief test run since new. Can’t beat it for the $$. It is tough to get used to PS1 again after playing with PS2 for so long. Feels like a PC running Windows XP after playing with Windows 7.[;)] I’ll have to call about the upcoming PS3 Turbine or else I’ll regret it.
My apologies to all. I am trying to catch up on my POT reading, oldest first.
Spent 7 hours today doing yardwork out in the broiling sun and I am cashed. Why so much yardwork? I was informed by the powers that be that we are having a houseful/yardful (22 and rising) over tomorrow for a cookout. Can’t let the guests see how we really live. [:-^] Took a couple of pre-emptive ibuprofen. Drank a lot of water while I was working but nothing was coming out the other end…so I have been drinking more over the past few hours, which will probably have me up in the middle of the night. [banghead]
BlownOut… [angel] for success with this coming week’s treatments. You said you have been down a similar path in the past, and we are all pulling for similar success this time around.
**RaySP and SJ…**think of these procedures as routine maintenance on a classic, extremely valuable, and rare vehicle. Both of you are rare. [:-^] **Ray…**at least you finally have a diagnosis. **SJ…**one down and one to go? Hang in there. [angel] for both of you.
**DougM…**congratulations on your middle boy’s milestone. [bow][tup] We fuss, we fret, and we worry. Yet somehow the kiddies manage to land on their feet and keep moving forward. BTW…how’s the “Just For Men” working out for you? [:-^]
**Jeffrey…**do you have a cast iron stomach? [swg]
Mornin’ boys. Mornin’ English. Partly cloudy & 73 already in the Mid-Atlantic region. Wifey wants big AC in the LR window, so waiting on future-son-in-law to arrive. Then we are taking grandbaby to da pyuhl. Until then, laundry, sipping coffee, killing ants (terro), and maybe a little decal work.
[oX)] update. Wifey and I went out on yatchet yesterday. Perfect conditions, and we were amazed at all the sailboats out there, and equally amazed at how few motorboats. For the most part, I singlehanded my rig, and docking was super smooth using the southerly breeze to my benefit. Only “barked” at the Admiral once (what is it about “keep straight” the ladyfolk don’t get?). Very nice dinner at Dock-of-the-Bay, as we watched a young man fall over the stern of an incoming cutty-cruiser. He got back up ok.[:-^]
As to gun-laws, why does the MEDIA only report “unfortunate” incidents, when there are hundreds of home-defense shootings that only make the back page…hmmmmmmmmmm… Anybody?
