Had a nice suprise chat with Brutus today, we usually talk on sunday morning. Overcast but the rain is staying just south of here for now but is expected to reach this way overnite. No trains today at all, headache just will not go away and wife is complaining I sleep too much during the day, but when sleeping, no headache. I guess they just have to have something to pick about. A&W+banilla is ready…S.J.
Come on you guys get your butts out of bed. It is almost seven am. I’m up and working. I bet Laz is out running in the rain this morning.
Bad news out of LA this morning. Twelve people dead in a head on train crash.
“Houston, we have a problem.” When this hurricane is over, the damage will be horrific. Building codes that are not enforced will be one of the culprits.
IT rained all night off and on but has quit for now. The sun is coming out and looking nice but it is muggy.
Going up to church this morning to help with a ministry retreat / workshop. I will be presenting how to read from the pulpit to the readers. After that hanging some new curtain rods.
Morning all. Slept gooooood. Not going to Miss Edna’s. Need to work on trailer I am building. Got busy week right up to closing on Thrusday. Hot and HUMID day here. Prayers for all my Texas buddies. One still has phone and power. Others, no word. Some stayed in the Houston area as they claimed medical emergencies [??]. Had a call from friends here where their son and DIL where ordered not to leave Houston due to troubled pregancy. What happens if baby wants to come during storm and can’t get to hospital? Do not understand that one. Oh well, not a DR. Later
It’s rained for about 36 hours now, close to 4" so far. It’s been a steady, gentle rain with no wind but we are just soaked. Spent two hours yesterday AM cleaning out the gutters that are covered with cheap plastic protectors, worthless. When our new roof is installed we are also spending the money for Gutter Toppers, hope they work, we have 3 large Oak trees over our home–sometimes I wonder but they are beautfiul and provide great shade.
Spent one whole afternoon this week putting every train on the layout and running/charging them, time did fly! Running trains for me when the weather is nice just doesn’t happen, I have to force myself to go down there but once I’m there I really enjoy myself, just like exercise. Soon (6 weeks?) I’ll be down there several days a week contemplating a new design, not sure when it’s going to happen–probably not this winter.
Big rivalry game today in Iowa City----Cyclone vs Hawkeyes, it’s going to a mud bowl for sure with all of this rain.
Family from way up North coming down to visit cousin in hospital. Cousin is getting worse in addirion to his injurys from accident he now has picked up a staff infection and merci infection(it seems it is an all to common thing in the hospitals anymore[sigh] )
Lite rain all nite and rain expected till monday. I have not made plans for today yet. Oatmeal and toast for breakfast, its good and does not grind your teeth away. My train buddy is back from his trip so maybe some news next week as he goes to the train store almost every day. He took the car ferry from Mich. to Wisc. and then looped north and then back home. There’s lots to do on a trip like that, can fill a week easy. TTFN…S.J.
Morning all. Rained steadily all night and should continue all weekend. Sad news about that train wreck. Someone is in trouble for both trains sharing that track at that time. I’m always impressed with the UP’s dispatching of our Metra rush hours - all these trains sharing the same tracks at 55 mph - most heading in the same direction though and few freights (on my line). Hope to work in the basement later today. Have to find a place for the plasticville cathedral. Practicing ‘synchronized coughing’ with my bride…
Jim, I immediately thought when reading about your activities today, ‘some sermons I’ve heard were as dynamic as hanging curtain rods.’ Hope your lessons are taken to heart.
Jon, was watching WC and they were saying big rains in IA. Was hoping you were OK. You will get plenty of train running time soon. SNOHIO will be coming. [:O] Was concerned about Doug M but just heard from him and he seemed OK. Maybe he is too far NW of Chicago. WC was telling of lots of basements flooded there. Called Miss Edna and all the gang is absent today. Steve working. Terry’s few months old Grandson is here from PA. Jerry is in NY![:O] No one going to the Great American Train Show in Raleigh. Gracious.
Thanks for asking Chief. Sump is working a lot. I wonder what is causing the rain on us. We’ve been pretty dry. It’s sure warm - maybe it is weather Ike pushed our way first, then more rain from Ike tomorrow.
66 and humid here rained this morn and yes BUCKEYE, I did get caught running my 2 miler in the rain. BUCKEYE must have that ESPN or something? Seems like he knows all? And YES the BUCKEYEd CANDIES that BUCKEYE brought to us GIZ in PA are the greatest candies on earth. My wife loved em. I had a few and were great.
Ran trains last nite cause outdoor fire activity was rained out. We got rain here in central PA. Gonna be cuttin the grass this week. Trains all ran good. NO PILE UPs. Ran both Lionel FEFs and the El Caitan set and the NP RS11. Great time ran them for 2.5 hrs. Even played with the Gantry crane filling up ore cars with coal, cool.
Have another hole in flat roof gotta fix today before next rain storm.
Nothing much going on here today - sorry to hear about the train wreck. I worked this morning and we’re going to a birthday party tonight. Hope all feel better soon!
Laz - be sure the roof is cleared off, so I have someplace to park! Gotta come over and grab a couple Old Mills as we are dry!
Chuck #3, They had about 4 hours of TV coverage on local TV here in Southern California last night. It was a head on collision between a UP freight train and a Metrolink commuter train. It happened around 4:30PM PST yesterday. Engineer on Metrolink was killed I heard. UP crew survived. There have been 18 deaths reported so far and 130 injured. There were about 250 people on the train at the time of the collision. The commuter train had three bombardier type cars. The first one behind the engine turned over on it’s side and the Metrolink engine was shoved (telescoped) through the passenger car behind it killing many people. People on the train said the crash was horrindous. LA fire and rescue people worked all through the night to get people out. Speculation is that the commuter train may have run a red signal prior to the crash but no one knows for sure yet. NTSB will investigate. This accident occured on the route that goes up the California Coast from L.A. to San Francisco. It happened between Van Nuys and Chattsworth. The collision was not far from a tunnel and the freight train was partially in the tunnel after the crash. Have not heard yet when the line will be reopened. Amtrak Coast Starlite will not run today as well as a local Amtrak train from L.A. to San Luis Obispo. All Metrolink trains are cancelled beyond the wreck site. Yesterday they were running some as far as Van Nuys and bussing people from there. Ray
